The following are in response to Gary Halbert’s commentary, The Real Obamacare Nightmare is Just Beginning, which was published on April 23:
Dear Editor,
Was this commentary published by the Koch brothers, or is Halbert one of their unwitting pawns? His column regarding the ACA is nothing more than a rehashing of old mistruths and new ones, mashed together to create more fear-mongering, at which the GOP seems to excel. He is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.
My personal opinion is that the GOP was wrong in refusing to work with the Democrats on the Affordable Care Act (ACA, a.k.a. Obamacare). They missed a great opportunity when they just said "no." As we go forward, we all know the ACA is not perfect, but neither was George W. Bush's prescription program for seniors, until the Democrats worked with the GOP to fix it. The Democrats could have stood by and gained a huge political advantage. On the first day of the program, millions of seniors discovered they had no prescription coverage at all! Instead, both sides of the aisle worked together to fix it.
We would all be better off if the GOP and the right-leaning journalists who support them begin to propose fixes, instead of just standing around taking potshots.
Thanks again,
Vince Lipert
Dear Editor,
Small point... Halbert stated that people believed that Jesus rose from the dead over 2,000 years ago. Scholars generally agree that Jesus was crucified between 30-36 AD. That makes his crucifixion less than 2,000 years ago – about 1980 years ago. People are confused by the fact that our AD calendar begins at the (estimated) birth year of Jesus, not his death and resurrection.
